We’re currently carrying out an extensive programme of work to upgrade the technology in and around Saltash Tunnel, including the control system. This update of the systems will future-proof the structure for many years to come.
Tunnel gantries in place and electrical works ongoing
Work on the ground is making good progress with the gantries in the tunnel now installed. The bridge gantries are also currently being modified to accommodate the new lane control signs.
There is a lot of activity taking place on site, with a focus on the electrical aspects of the scheme such as lighting, cable management and cable removal works. Specialist equipment will start to be delivered soon as part of the next phase of technological installation and will be put together in the service buildings.
The emergency telephones in the tunnel and immediately outside the tunnel will be out of service for the duration of the tunnel cabinet replacement. Signage will be displayed as and when this element of the works is undertaken.
We still expect the tunnel control system to be back in operation early in the new year, meaning the ‘tidal flow’ (which allows lanes to change direction to manage traffic) will come back on and benefit traffic which uses the tunnel. Ancillary works will continue onsite until the summer.
We thank everyone for their continued patience during these works which will also bring major safety and air quality benefits including modernising the ventilation control system, new traffic signals and energy efficient LED lighting.
