The Parish Council’s Environment Committee discussed the issue of nuisance insects at its meeting last night. We are currently awaiting the results of the insect survey being carried out by UKHSA.
We will continue working closely with Cornwall Council, the Environment Agency and our MP to press for a full ecological study into the causes of the increased number of biting insects in the Calstock area.
In the meantime, residents are advised to take precautions against the insects, including:
- Using repellents containing DEET
- Wearing long‑sleeved clothing, trousers and a hat when outdoors
- Supporting natural predators such as bats, birds and hedgehogs by installing suitable nesting or roosting boxes
Further information will be shared as soon as it becomes available.
We appreciate there will not be a ‘quick fix’ for this issue and understand how debilitating it is for many residents and businesses. The Parish Council will continue to raise awareness, seek specialist advice and support local initiatives that encourage a healthier ecosystem to help restore the natural balance.
