Councillor vacancy – Harrowbarrow Ward

Calstock Parish is situated in south east Cornwall (UK), close to the Devon border. With a population of approximately 6,000 and 2,600 households, it comprises of a number of villages, the larger being Gunnislake and Calstock.  The Parish has a vacancy for a co opted member for Harrowbarrow ward, and we are looking for someone who has a desire to help their community and promote the parish. We are currently the second largest parish in Cornwall.

The role of a Councillor can be varied at the best of times. Perhaps the three main areas of responsibility are:

  • Representing the people in your area
  • Community leadership
  • Supporting projects in your parish

At present we are creating a Neighbourhood Development Plan, have declared a Climate Emergency and are also looking at projects involving funding for a new skatepark, and updating the Cemetery Chapel. Amongst other things we look after 2 cemeteries, 4 playparks, car parks, public toilets, allotments, bus shelters, footpaths, litter/dog and salt bins, moorings at Calstock and open spaces at Pleasure Piece, Albaston Millenium Green and Latchley Green. The role of a councillor is varied and one that is not paid, so it’s more about having the time to spare to come to at least 3 meetings a month and being able to give something back to the community. There are 17 other councillors representing the 5 wards of Calstock, Gunnislake, Chilsworthy, Harrowbarrow and Delaware, a clerk, deputy clerk and 2 workmen. Our precept for this financial year is £183000, to cover all the things mentioned above and pay the staff!

A selection interview will take place for any interested persons on Tuesday 9th July 2019 at the Tamar Valley Centre after the Full Council meeting.
