Last night we held our Citizen of the Year Awards.
There were many people and community groups to recognise for the support they give their communities. The following list is certainly by no means exhaustive but some of them who were mentioned last night were:
- Harrowbarrow Village Hall, Social Committee, Community Association and Community Shop
- Drip Drip – promoting River Awareness and campaigning for cleaner waters – led by Ken Finn
- Cemetery and Churchyard Volunteers – Lynne Gennard and Eve Huddy in Albaston and the Living Churchyard Project in Calstock, led by Jane Weatherby
- Latchley Community Group – liaison: Judith McQuilin
- Calstock in Bloom – Colin Bates and Rayson Pritchard amongst others
- Town Farm Field – Janine Falle, Pete Thompson, Richard Greaves and Gill Court
- Gunnislake Community Matters
- Tamar Valley Bus – Carol Green for co-ordinating the service
- Woodland Centre – in particular Tracy Martin for her help with the Friendship Club
- Gunnislake Community Hub – providing a warm and friendly space
We have been supported by a number of volunteers in our work and regularly work with the Transferable Skills Team based in St Ives and Duchy College Students from Stoke Climsland.
Our Community Award went to the Tamar Community Fridge for their work in helping people with food hardship and for reducing the sheer amount of food waste. Mai Evans co-ordinates the project but it was Sue Hambly who was asked to collect the certificate for her contribution and for going above and beyond her voluntary role.
Our Individual Award went to Kate Goodman. Kate moved to Gunnislake fairly recently. Since then she has got involved in a number of projects and initiatives and is very much a ‘doer’. A stalwart member of our Environment and Climate Emergency Committee she is the first to get stuck into any project and will seek a solution to any issues she encounters (there isn’t a drain in Gunnislake that hasn’t been assessed by Kate). She has also just taken on the Chair of Gunnislake Community Matters.
