The Environment Agency are warning that due to the changes in our climate, we should be prepared for biting insects to return. These were especially prevalent in Calstock over the last two summers and are very likely to return. Precautions should also be taken in other areas and near rivers, especially.

There was advice published last year on the NHS which should still be heeded: https://www.england.nhs.uk/2024/05/searches-for-nhs-advice-on-insect-bites-and-stings-surge-ahead-of-bank-holiday-weekend/

Whilst we are not in a position to say whether the insects are mosquitoes, the information on this factsheet may also be useful for those bitten.

You are also able to send any specimens to mosquito@UKHSA.gov.uk for identification should you be unfortunate enough to be able to capture one.

It may seem a bit early to be issuing these warning given the dark clouds and sheer volume of rain we have had but with half-term approaching it will be useful to share this information.
