Our committee members, Gill Court & John Wells, with advice from Lesley Strong and Stuart Wood of  the Forest for Cornwall have taken the results of our consultations and put them into planting schemes for our three Phase 1 areas, Calstock & St Ann’s Chapel Recreation Fields & Albaston Millennium Green. Attached are copies for each area.

We have ordered what we need from three local suppliers using only indigenous plants. We will be using biodegradable tree guards, weed mats and stakes. Our budget will cover the costs so thank you again to everybody who contributed to the Crowdfunder.

The plants won’t be ready till November so it made great sense to do our planting in National Tree Week which runs from 27  November to 4 December.

We have had a great response to our request for volunteers to help with planting and on-going maintenance. 21 people have volunteered. If you are interested please let us know: we could always do with more.

We have a management plan for each area. A sample copy is attached.

We will have a team of volunteers for each area. We now have a volunteer team leader for each area who will coordinate the work supported by our Forest for Cornwall colleagues.  Each team will be backed up by a Parish councillor. The leaders and councillors are Neil Pope & Cllr John Wells for St Ann’s Chapel; Dr John Harris & Cllr Gill Boreham for Albaston; and Jane Weatherby & myself for Calstock. Our thanks to them all. We will be meeting with them shortly to plan how we are going to do it.

We are now also beginning to look at Phase 2. For a start, we have applied to the Close the Gap Community Hedge Fund for a grant of £1800 to re-lay hedges along March Lane in Calstock and in various places on St Ann’s Chapel Recreation Field.

So it’s full steam ahead. We hope you agree that this is a project to be proud of, planting more local species of plants to mitigate climate damage and encourage bio-diversity is our way of ‘doing our bit’. Thank you for everyone who supported us. Do let us have your thoughts if you have any comments or further suggestions.

Best wishes.

Alastair Tinto, Parish Councillor & chair of the Forest for Calstock Parish
