The Forest for Calstock Parish will start planting trees and fruiting bushes in the autumn. We are putting out a call for volunteers to help plant and maintain them.
The Forest for Calstock Parish is an exciting project set up by the Parish Council who won an award of £1,000 in 2020 from Cornwall Council’s Forest for Cornwall which aims to re-forest 2% of the Duchy and help mitigate the negative effects of climate change. The parish council successfully raised another £2500 from a Crowdfunding project.
We want to create a positive natural environment on land owned by the Parish Council to combat the devastating effects of climate change. Engaging with communities, we are going to plant a rich diversity of trees, hedges and wood encouraging nourishment and safe spaces for wildlife including pollinators. This will help us give something back to our ecosystem.
The project has had two rounds of consultations with the community and key organisations within the Parish. We have been supported by Lesley Strong and Stuart Wood from the Forest for Cornwall and the Tamar Valley AONB. The sites we have chosen – all owned by the Parish Council – are Calstock Playing Field, St Ann’s Chapel Playing Field and the Millennium Green at Albaston.
Covid restrictions held up our ambition to plant in the spring this year but they are now planning to plant in the autumn.
If you are able to offer practical support of any kind initially to plant the trees and to take part in an ongoing maintenance programme please let the Forest for Calstock Parish know by contacting clerk@calstockparishcouncil. gov.uk or telephoning 01822 748847.
Hi, You may already have my details to hand as I did express an interest in helping with the practical side of this project earlier in the year. Before retirement I spent my working life in farm and estate management and was involved in many schemes of woodland and hedgerow planting so am happy to be involved in both planting and ongoing management.
Regards Neil Pope
Thank you Neil. I am sure we do have you on file but it’s good to know you are still interested. Is there a particular location you would like to help in? We are planting in St Ann’s Chapel, Albaston and Calstock?
